What Is The Definition Of Healthy Living?

Health, according to the World Health Organization,is “a condition of full physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of illness and infirmity.” Various definitions have been employed over the years for various purposes. Still, there are some universal and definitive guidelines that should be regarded as a foundation for the definition of health.

According to WHO, health is the “proper balance of body, mind and spirit that enhances the security of the individual and his or her family.” It is also said that physical health aids the proper function of the organs for the maintenance of the general health of an individual. Psychological well-being, on the other hand, is the capacity to enjoy life and acquire new skills through enjoyment, which is crucial for the maintenance of productivity and development. It also entails the capacity to cope with challenges, disappointments, anxiety and stress.

The practice of health education about the causes of diseases and the preventive measures for the avoidance of health problems is considered as part of the strategy for health promotion. According to WHO, health equity refers to differences in health at the level of individual life settings and environments. Health education, therefore, relates to education about the prioritized care of people at the different stages of their life, based on the concept of health equity.

Psychological wellness can be achieved through mental health, as well as the capacity to establish and maintain good health via the ability to appreciate ones own and others’ physical health. Psychological wellness then, is the capacity to identify and evaluate well-being, including fitness, personality and behaviour, according to a person’s needs and resources. It also involves managing change and addressing transitions in life. Mental health is the capacity to learn and apply knowledge, to learn new things and manage one’s mental health, emotions and physical environment. In addition, it involves emotional well-being, which is affected by physiological and psychosocial factors such as supportive relationships, self-esteem and confidence, and support networks. The discipline of psychology therefore, includes the study of the understanding of mind and its functions, and its impact on our experiences and our lives.

There is a high prevalence of mental health issues in the US population. In fact, there is a proven link between poor mental health and poor physical health. For instance, people with a history of psychological illness are more likely to develop unhealthy behaviours, such as smoking, alcohol abuse, dependence on drugs, depression and eating disorders. Similarly, individuals with a history of physical illness are more likely to develop illnesses that can be attributed to poor physical health, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Healthy behaviors are essential for maintaining good health. A good practice therefore, is to identify and determine pre-defined health goals and objectives, set reasonable expectations and set achievable goals, and monitor and measure progress toward these aims. This approach allows researchers to construct health programmes that address priorities, while at the same time being possible to scale up if needed. In addition, this definition of healthy living includes adequate levels of physical activity, balanced diet, intake of reasonable amounts of dietary supplements, maintenance of appropriate physical strength and flexibility, and avoiding too much alcohol or tobacco use.
