The Definition of Mental Health and Well-Being

We often take for granted that we are in good health; that we are not experiencing any symptoms that would give us cause for concern or discomfort. But this is not true all the time. Just as the saying goes, you are what you eat, you are what you do; no one can determine your health by observing just your outward appearance. In reality, health is more than just looking good, it is also about maintaining a balance between our physical body and mind. Here are some simple ways of caring for your health:

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is an “uneven condition of the physical, mental and emotional well-being of an individual and his or her family.” A wide variety of definitions have previously been used over the years. Mental health is a term most people have heard before, but few truly understand its meaning. For example, healthy mental health is having positive thoughts and emotions. Healthy mental health involves having realistic expectations and positive resources to fall back on when needed, being able to communicate effectively with others, having positive relationships, having a sense of humor is essential to maintaining good physical health as well.

Maintaining a good healthful diet is essential to maintaining good health. Most public health experts agree that a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low in saturated fat, high in protein, and low in salt is very important in keeping the body healthy. These types of diets promote good health by increasing the amount of energy that the body receives from food and decreasing the amount of calories that are converted to fat. A good diet can help the body metabolize nutrients, eliminate waste, build immunity, and maintain a healthy weight. The consumption of a balanced diet is essential to one’s mental, physical, and emotional health.

Another definition of “good health” is complete physical well-being. This means having a normal level of height, weight, skin tone, and stamina. Having a healthy diet and exercising regularly promotes a complete level of physical well-being. A person that has a strong sense of self-esteem and good self-image is likely to live a physically healthy life and be free from the physical illness that many are plagued with.

Mental health is also influenced by physical fitness. Mental wellness includes the ability to learn, concentrate, solve problems, and make good decisions. A person that has a strong mental fitness is likely to have high physical fitness. Mental fitness helps in reducing the negative impact of stress on the mind and the body. Physical fitness helps maintain a healthy weight and maintains a healthy body weight.

As you can see, the definition of “mental health” covers much more than physical health. Although it is important for us to maintain a healthy level of physical health, we must also work towards increasing our levels of mental health in order to have optimal mental health. It is important to maintain a good self image and positive self-image if we want to improve our self esteem and achieve psychological well-being. It is also a great idea to find a sport or other activity that you can participate in that will help you improve your mood and spirit. We all need to make time to spend with ourselves and connect with our inner being. The time we spend in our homes, with our loved ones, or with our friends can have a tremendous impact on our mental health and well-being.
