How Much Food Energy Should I Eat?

Food is any material consumed to provide nutrition to an organism intended for use as a source of food. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and often contains essential nutrients, including vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, sugars or other nutrients necessary for the growth and maintenance of an organism. It is said that everything that grows must eat food, and similarly, all creatures which live must eat other organisms for their survival. The major functions of food are digestion, absorption, utilization, excretion, storage and distribution. The primary food sources are animal or plant tissue such as flesh, blood, bone, hooves, feathers, fur, shells, and vegetable matter such as leaves, roots, seeds, fruits, roots and tubers.

Common foods eaten by man include: breads, cereals, pastas, rice, beans, vegetables, fruit (fresh, dried, stewed), meat (meat, fish, poultry), milk, eggs, sugar, salt and processed foods. The diet is often supplemented with the addition of some herbal products (such as ginseng, cloves, ginger, garlic, nettles, mace, nutmeg, thyme, etc.) as well as vitamins, minerals, herbs and medicines. Many cultures throughout the world have long realized the benefits of eating foods rich in vitamins and other beneficial substances.

Modern humans are usually fond of a variety of types of foods, although they tend to eat mostly one type of food – primarily carbohydrates and protein. These two food groups are the most important in sustaining life and maintain the health of the human body. Carbohydrates provide the bulk of the calories needed by the human body to function properly. Animal products such as meat, poultry, fish, lentils, nuts, whole grains, and fruits are all important dietary sources of carbohydrates.

A number of food additives are used to increase the shelf-life and taste of certain types of food. These food additives, such as sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, flavones, artificial colors, saccharin and synthetic flavorings, are commonly added to processed food. Many processed food manufacturers use these additives to make foods taste better and to increase the shelf-life. Unfortunately, these additives can be very harmful to humans when eaten in large quantities.

Another problem facing many people today is obesity. It has become one of the leading causes of sicknesses and diseases. In order to stay fit, people need to eat enough food that is good for them. Unfortunately, many people are underweight and eat too much food. When this happens, many people get health issues such as high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes.

One way to keep fit and trim is to avoid the use of a lot of chemicals in the food that you eat. Artificial ingredients and preservatives, as well as fat, can cause a huge drop in the quality and nutritional value of your food. The best thing to do is to buy food that is fresh and healthy. Foods that contain fresh ingredients and are free from chemical additives and preservatives include organic fruits and vegetables, lean meat, fish and poultry, milk, cheese and whole grain foods. In addition to eating healthy foods, you can also add exercise to your daily routine. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise that you can incorporate into your daily life and eating healthy foods with balanced amounts of good fat, protein, carbohydrates and good carbohydrates will help you live a long and disease-free life.
