The Definition of Health
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is an “uneven condition of the body in its physiological condition and not the absence of sickness and infirmity”. A number of definitions have also been applied for various purposes over the years. It has been defined by numerous studies and research over the years, and continues to be constantly improved upon. Some health conditions have been included that had not been earlier recognized as having any relation to one’s health. The ultimate goal of health is to lead a healthy lifestyle, and make sure one lives a long and productive life.
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization is “the absence of sickness and disease, a state of perfect health of the body and mind”. It is always improving and changing with the progress of technology and research. It includes physical, mental, and emotional aspects and is inclusive of the aspects of the self-image, social relationships, occupational performance, cognitive function, and resilience.
It can be influenced by both internal factors and external ones, and it affects everyone, regardless of age, gender, social status, or economic background. It helps to protect the community from the impact of either natural or man-made disasters as well as from any other harmful conditions. It can help communities and individuals to cope with emergencies and provide them with the basic services they need. In the past, health care was not viewed as something that people should seek for themselves, but it became necessary when circumstances became more complicated.
As we move into the modern era, the concepts of good health and illness are now interchanged more often. Health disorders are now seen as a medical problem of the mind and there is now more effort put into helping those with mental health needs as well as physical health needs. People who suffer from anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, drug and alcohol addictions are all included in this. Many studies have also been conducted to find out what makes some people better at handling their condition than others, and how these differences can be used to improve treatment programs for other mental illnesses.
What exactly is the definition of “wellness”? Wellness can be subjective and is influenced by the person’s views on his or her own health, what is considered to be a normal state, and how this affects the way others see him or her. When we look at some aspects of the definition of wellness, we can get a clearer picture of what the word means. According to some educators and health professionals, it is the state of being mentally healthy or functional at any given time. People who are healthy are more likely to get involved in active life and are not easily categorized as depressed or handicapped, even if they may have an illness such as cancer or diabetes.
Another aspect that helps us define mental health is the presence of four distinct emotional states: happiness, sadness, anxiety, and calm. A person cannot be happy unless he is happy with himself and vice versa. Someone with a sad mood can only be anxious or fearful if he is sad, and vice versa. Anxiety and depression are often closely related, as they both stem from feelings of low self-worth. Finally, the state of calm is related to awareness, which is the first step to emotional awareness.
